Alumni Hans Kossmann, entrepreneur and mentor!

Hans Kossmann has recently been incorporated into the business incubator at the Universidad Austral de Chile.

The aim of the business incubator is to provide crucial support to innovative ventures in the field of biotechnology. In order to provide advice, the raising of capital and transfer of technology, Kossmann an entrepreneur and business specialist in the field of Biotech was bought on as a mentor to join the business incubator team.
As an expert in startups, Kossmann said his work would be to assist budding entrepreneurs, “acting as a mentor in some of the projects, or developing specific studies or analysis. Furthermore he will actively participate in raising capital for enterprises that are being nurtured and promoted by the incubator.”

 Among his other responsibilities as a mentor at the Austral incubator, Kossmann, defines which innovative projects receive merits associated with the area of specialization and the state of the art developments in the field.
“I think in this field we have a wealth of potential new business generation. This is the field in which I have been specializing and where I think I can contribute the most to strategy analysis building on my contacts with entrepreneurs. “

New Appointments from our Alumni: Alejandro Portilla

Alejandro PortillaWe are pleased to announce that one of our Master in Biotechnology Management alumni (2009-10 intake), Alejandro Portilla has been named Established Products, EMEA West and East Commercial Manager, S&OP and NPI.

Previously, Alejandro was the Business Excellence Manager for Europe and Canada in GPO.

Alejandro began his career in Abbott 14 years ago as the Abbott International Head of Customer Service in Guatemala. During his tenure he has also been a Logistics Coordinator for Latin America, a Senior Export Planner, as well as a Demand Manager for Latin America and Canada. Prior to joining Abbott, Alejandro worked in multiple supply chain roles in Tata and Colgate Palmolive. Alejandro holds a Bachelors degree in Industrial Engineering from Universidad Rafael Landivar in Guatemala, and a Master in Biotechnology Management from Instituto de Empresa Business School in Spain.

From the Master in Biotechnology Management team, we are extremely proud to announce that another of our brilliant Alumni has been distinguished with the first prize at the Campus Emprende 2011 Business Plan Competition 

This Entrepreneurship-renowned Competition  has awarded  Jesus Gómez Ochoa de Alda (MBM 2011) with €10,000 in cash for his Biotech plan: a project to develop and market a microalgae harvesting system.

The lack of economically viable harvesting processes remains a major obstacle to commercial biofuel production from microalgae.

After this successful milestone in his career as an entrepreneur, Jesús Gómez will launch an spin-off, Green Biodrift, to develop the system using comparative genomics and synthetic biology.

REGINA HECKER Regina Hecker

Regina Hecker, Master in Biotechnology Management 2010, has been appointed, after finishing the program, as Analyst at Vontobel Bank in Zürich.

Previous to this position, Regina was Post Doctoral Research Fellow at the University Children’s Hospital in Zürich.

 

 

GUILLERMO ROBERT DE ARQUER

Guillermo Robert de Arquer

    Guillermo Robert de Arquer, Master in Biotechnology Management 2010, has been appointed, after finishing the program, as Advanced Senior Consultant in the Life Sciences Department at Ernst and Young in Barcelona.

His new projects will cover all the value chain of the biotech and pharma industry at an international level.

THE ECONOMICS OF PERSONALIZED MEDICINE
 

Many believe that the introduction of personalized therapies (treatments tailored to individual patients) will revolutionize the future of healthcare. However, there is significant uncertainty whether personalized medicine will increase the burdon to our healthcare systems due to higher prices, or whether personalized medicine has the potential to save healthcare costs. The presentation will explore some of the economic factors that play a role in the development and marketing of personalized treatments.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Joachim Greuel is founding and managing partner of Bioscience Valuation in Germany. The firm supports private and public biotech companies worldwide to communicate their value propositions and to close financial transactions successfully. He is also Co-founder of BioCapital Advisors, a company recently founded in Madrid, focusing on the evaluation and marketing of healthcare investment opportunities.

Joachim began his professional career as head of a research team at Bayer AG (Germany). After his business education he joined the strategic services practice of Andersen Consulting (Switzerland and Germany). Before founding Bioscience Valuation Joachim was investment manager at New Medical Technologies, a Swiss venture capital fund.

Joachim studied biology in Marburg (Germany) and Cambridge (UK) and received his Ph.D. summa cum laude from the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research in Frankfurt (Germany). He holds an MBA with a finance and health care focus from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (USA). Joachim is a member of the ‘American Finance Association’ and a number of professional healthcare organizations.
